Headteacher’s Welcome

Eastlea Community School

Discover Eastlea Community School in Newham, a co-educational secondary school where students thrive academically and personally in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment.

I am the proud Headteacher of Eastlea Community School, a co-educational secondary school in Newham serving our diverse East London community. I believe wholeheartedly that this school has much to offer its local community. Our aim is for all students, regardless of their starting point, to achieve their full potential in their academic outcomes as well as their personal development.

We are proud to be recognised as an Ofsted Good secondary school in Newham, offering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment. With strong pastoral care and dedicated staff, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed. At Eastlea, the well-being of our students is central to everything we do, and this is reflected in our strong pastoral system. Our dedicated staff work together to provide outstanding teaching and enrichment, so that students not only achieve academically but also flourish as part of a wider Newham Comunity Learning.

Our mission is for all students to develop lifelong interests, resilience, and a love of learning.

“Equality, respect, and tolerance are at the heart of the school’s values”, Ofsted 2025

Eastlea is a caring East London secondary school that values each individual learner. Every year group has a team of tutors, a dedicated Pastoral Manager, and an Achievement Leader who ensures strong academic progress and personal development. We set high expectations for all our students, supported by fair and consistent school policies that reflect the needs of our diverse Newham community.

Like all good parents, we want our students to be happy and successful. Through high-quality teaching, pastoral care, and enrichment, we ensure every child is supported to thrive.

“There are a wide range of opportunities for pupils to learn about future careers and different pathways to success”, Ofsted 2025

We are lucky to have outstanding facilities which allow us to offer a broad enrichment programme for secondary students in Newham. We want all of our students to discover an interest that they can pursue whilst at school and beyond. From music, drama, and arts to science, sports, and technology, students are encouraged to explore their talents both within lessons and through extracurricular clubs. Our thriving music department provides opportunities to perform, learn a wide range of instruments, and develop skills in music technology.

We provide our students with the experiences and opportunities to develop their personal skills to become valued citizens of the future.  We annually recruit a strong group of student leaders in each year group who regularly contribute to the life of the school.  We are proud of our Eastlea Eco group who run a range of projects to improve the sustainability of our school site.  We also have fantastic sporting facilities, with safe outdoor spaces and specialist coaching – including cricket, football, athletics, and more. Students can also join unique enrichment opportunities, such as The Curiosity Club, which allows Key Stage 3 students to explore topics beyond the national curriculum.

Students at Eastlea follow a broad and balanced curriculum. Our secondary curriculum in Newham has a three-year Key Stage 3 and a two-year Key Stage 4 where we are constantly working to broaden the range of subjects available for our students to study.  At Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to follow a breadth of subjects and options depending on their prior attainment and Progress 8 considerations.  We offer all of the subjects studied at Key Stage 3 (English, maths, science, geography, History, RE, French, Spanish, drama, music, art, technology and PE) as well as GCSE computer science, sociology, dance, photography and BTECs in travel and tourism and child development. We also encourage our students to gain a qualification in their community language, if they have one. Additional literacy and numeracy are also offered to those students who need it.  Additionally, there are opportunities for those students who wish to undertake additional GCSEs in citizenship, further maths, statistics and GCSE PE.

Our school is part of the Newham Community Learning Trust which consists of local Newham secondary schools: Sarah Bonnell, Lister and Rokeby as well as primary schools: Selwyn and Portway. a family of schools dedicated to providing high-quality education across the borough. As part of this trust, we share a collective ambition to foster excellence in teaching and learning, preparing our students for the challenges of the modern world. Our broad and balanced curriculum ensures that every student has the opportunity to discover their strengths, explore new interests, and develop lifelong passions. Every boy studies a modern language to GCSE level, and many achieve early success in mathematics and languages, building confidence that transcends linguistic and cultural barriers.

We are highly ambitious for our students, and believe that every young person can succeed.  Our students are supported by our committed team of teaching and non-teaching staff, all of whom are encouraged to pursue their own learning and professional development across our schools.
